తెలుగుకి వలసొచ్చిన ఓ గుజరాతీ!

దావిన్ పటేల్ మొదటి సారి తెలుగు క్లాస్ కి వచ్చినప్పుడు అది మూన్నాళ్ల ముచ్చటే అనుకున్నాను నేను.
రెండో రోజు నేను క్లాస్ లోకి అడుగుపెట్టేసరికి, అతనితో పాటు ఇంకో నలుగురు ఉత్తర భారతీయులు, వొక పాకిస్తానీ తెలుగు క్లాస్ లో కూర్చొని వున్నారు. నేను రాగానే వాళ్ళు నా దగ్గిరకి వచ్చి, "దావిన్ చెప్పాడు క్లాస్ చాలా బాగుందని! మేము తెలుగు తీసుకుంటాం. మాకు అనుమతివ్వండి" అని అడిగారు. "ఒక వారం చూద్దాం" అన్నాన్నేను. అలా వచ్చిన ఆ అయిదుగురు ఉత్తరాది వాళ్ళూ , వొక పాకిస్తానీ అబ్బాయీ ఇవాళ రెండో సంవత్సరం క్లాస్ దాకా తెలుగుని విడిచిపెట్టలేదు. ఇప్పుడు మూడో సంవత్సరం తెలుగు పెట్టండి, మేము తీసుకుంటాం అని మా ఛైర్మన్ కి వాళ్ళే పిటిషన్ పెట్టే దాకా వెళ్లారు.

ఆస్టిన్ తెలుగు క్లాస్ లో తెల్ల వాళ్ళు వుండడం ఆశ్చర్యం కాదు. కానీ, ఉత్తరాది వాళ్ళు వచ్చి తెలుగు తీసుకుంటూ, తెలుగు భాష మీద ప్రేమ పెంచుకోవడం అన్నది ఆస్టిన్ లో దావిన్ తోనే మొదలయ్యింది. ఇంతా చేస్తే, దావిన్ కి కనీసం ఓ తెలుగు గర్ల్ ఫ్రెండ్ కూడా లేదు! కానీ, తెలుగు మీద అతను ఎంత ఇష్టం పెంచుకున్నాడంటే, ఇంట్లో అమ్మతో మాట్లాడుతున్నప్పుడు గుజరాతీ మాటల మధ్య తెలుగు మాటలు వచ్చేస్తున్నాయట!

దావిన్ ఇవాళ టెక్సాస్ యూనివర్సిటీ కాంపస్ లో చాలా మందికి వొక మోడల్ గా మారాడు. అతనూ, అతని మిత్రులు కాంపస్ లో దాదాపు వొక తెలుగు ఉద్యమమే నడుపుతున్నారు. కాంపస్ లో తెలుగు భాషా దినోత్సవం , తెలుగు సినిమా పండగ లాంటివి ఇవాళ దావిన్ అతని మిత్రులు ముందుండి చేస్తున్నారు.

ఉత్తర భారతం, అమెరికన్ విద్యార్ధులలో తెలుగు పట్ల పెరుగుతున్న ఈ ఆసక్తిని గమనించిన శాన్ ఆంటోనియో తెలుగు సమితి సభ్యులు, ముఖ్యంగా గోవింద రాజు మాధవ రావు గారు తెలుగేతర తెలుగు విద్యార్ధులకి మనం వొక అవార్డు ఇస్తే బాగుంటుందని సంకల్పించారు. 250 డాలర్ల ఈ అవార్డు, ఉత్తమ తెలుగు విద్యార్థి అవార్డు దావిన్ కే ఇవ్వాలని తెలుగు విద్యార్ధులంతా ముక్తకంఠంతో వోటేశారు.

ఉత్తమ తెలుగు విద్యార్ధి దావిన్ కి ఈ అవార్డు ఈ నెల 30 న శాన్ ఆంటోనియో లో జరిగే దసరా ఉత్సవాల్లో ప్రదానం చేస్తున్నారు.

Telugu is not just for Telugus!

Being Gujarati, I honestly didn't know the first thing about the Telugu language before coming to UT. My major requires four years proficiency of a foreign language and a friend recommended Telugu, so I decided to try it out. From the first day in class, I knew I made the right decision. Learning a new alphabet and language has been challenging, but also extremely rewarding. Professor Afsar has created a great learning environment that isn't like any other traditional, lecture-based class. I don't even feel like I'm going to class, it's more of a discussion where I've been able to create bonds with many of my classmates through conversation. We are encouraged to leave English at the door and converse in Telugu, and through various exercises, my confidence in speaking a foreign tongue has increased so much.This carries over to outside of the classroom as well. I have participated in events like Telugu Culture Day, where I've been able to apply what I've learned in class. Our class also made a trip to Madras Pavillion to experience South Indian Cuisine. Activities like these reinforce the Telugu culture that I've learned about. In just the past couple of semesters, I've seen the growth in the program at UT firsthand, and I hope to help continue its progress. Just like first year Telugu isn't just another class, Afsar gaaru isn't just another professor. In my 2+ years of college, I've never had a professor that is more attentive to his students needs or cares more about our progress. He welcomes new students and makes the class enjoyable for all. His passion about the language and culture is visible in every single class and he instills this passion in all of his students. Afsar gaaru makes me excited to learn and there is no way I could have come this far without him. I still have a long way to go in becoming fluent, and I know that Professor Afsar and the UT Telugu program will help me get there.
